We are free to observe it but it is certainly not necessary. It might even distract you as you focus on trying to do something 'you don't know why' only for a short time, which is not a New Testament teaching.
Lent is of no salvific value. If you think your forty days of obeying God in certain things is a good thing, then what about the rest of the year. Are you going to disobey God?
So just focus on the essentials and let God's love surround you. Focus on real transformation and sanctification. Only the Holy Spirit can bring these about as we confess our inability and start living according to his Word.
Focus on the 'Sermon on the Mount' and let 1 Cor 13 be your manual for how to deal with people. That is how God is also dealing with us.
